SECOND LIFE - EnLuMiNuRiA ARTIST VANFAREL KUPFER TRIBUTE - WILL YOUR ART

I read a sad article on the death of a Second Life resident Vanfarel Kupfer. I did not know him / her personally. Second Life resident Bettina Tizzy brought up a very important issue many of us had not considered and that is not to forget the art work you virtually create because it could be totally wiped out if you didn't consider to 'WILL YOUR ART'

This is a tribute to this artist so their work is never forgotten. My heart goes out to their good Second Life friend Native Aeon. The idea of using your real life Will to protect your virtual creations or any other content for that matter on the Internet is something in this day and age we must now consider.

Gallery of Vanfarel Kupfer

The Sim was just one big beautiful light show. I had thought of my emails and sites but not really about Second Life material and want to thank Bettina Tizzy for bringing this to light.

http://npirl.blogspot.com/2009/04/vanfarel-kupfer-rip.html

I backup everything I can and had thought about someday someone will have the honor eek of rummaging through all I had saved. Between the real life photography and videos I have accumulated over my life time now I have to really consider all that is on the Internet.

I hope you enjoy the film and for those out there that don't understand Second Life well its a great place to create so much that is impossible in reality. It's really the first time I saw this level of visual imagery quality with objects in this virtual world. The photogrpahy was out of this world. I really saw and felt the 3D effect and the interaction for the viewer that was provided was remarkable.

They are trying to move towards this kind of application for this platform and I finally got to see a display of their vision. There are quit a few good exhibits that have appeared on Second Life now but this ones the best 3D, interactive one that really demonstrated how in the future virtual worlds like Second life can be applied to so many other subjects either it be history, in the medical field or in the classroom.

They did a fantastic job. I placed of course my little avatar in there so you could see the scale of an avatar vs objects in the environment. What they did was no easy task and I hope to see another great example like this created once again.

Filmed & Edited by Sophia Yates 2009

I had originally filmed this April 30th and went back to find the interactive rezzable artifacts. That really made it interesting. I can see this being applied to possibly exploring the human body. Still amazed at the3D quality!
Second Life Chernobyl Photographic Exhibition

Take a virtual journey to Chernobyl's 'No Man's Land' a photographic exhibition documenting the aftermath of the 1986 disaster.

A 2D & 3D Photographic exhibition of the Nuclear Wasteland of Chernobyl and the surrounding district. This was a powerful exhibition. Take time to absorb the images and read the story.

This was a very moving exhibition to experience virtually . What an
adventure this young man and his friends had photographing the remnants
of such a significant historic catastrophic disaster in our history's time. Not
only documenting this but risking their own health as well. People visit this place to this day photographing and some even moving back to the outer skirts of the accident.

I was told by this young mans father that when you go there you can't drink the water of course but they do eat the fish in restaurants nearby. When you order fish at a restaurants near there, they wave Geiger counter across the fish to read how radioactive it is. When they do this It does show it has levels of radio active properties and they still eat it..

As I
landed on this sim where the exhibition was I was greeted by Aino Baar who is in real life an
International Curator & Representative of a Museum in real life also an Art Writer
and founder of the Second life group OPEN this END.

The images this young man took featured in this film have to be
seen. I remember this happening back then in 1986 and it scared the
heck out me to tell you the truth. We were not told of the severity
right away which was just as frightening.

Mathoni

photographer featured here. In Second Life. His friends call him the

These people who go there to this day are still taking risks with their own health. It's like a field trip to some. Quite a build by the standards in Second Life. Extraordinary to say the least. At the time of my last visit he still mentioned then he still had a lot of work to do before it is complete.I can't wait. I will provide an update when I re-visit the home.

This house virtual house is a replica of the house used in the film IronMan. I wonder if he will add more to it. The second Ironman film is also due to be out this spring. I wonder if they will use the same house? Abacus didn't have much to go by because basically the house does not exist and he only had two images to go by from the film to come up with this design. I think he did a really wonderful job putting this together.

Hollywood is known to use certain architects in their films and this home reflects the work of a famous architect named John Lautner. I did find a photograph of a home resembling the face of the home used in the film and the one built here. his work is all over the Internet. That roof line was very difficult to render I'm sure.

In the Hollywood film this home is suppose to be sitting on top of Point Doom out in the Pacific Ocean. Again that does not exist in reality. This Virtual structure sits on a virtual sim all alone and was not only difficult to build for Abacus but to fit it properly on the sim you see in the image above. Well that alone took a lot of man hours and creative thought as to how it sat on top of that sim which he also did very well.
The avatar Abacus Mimistrobell was born 11/19/2006 and owns AM Profound Designs in Second Life and from his profile he states that he is inclined to do custom sims, buildings, offices, and showrooms.

Very talented young man from Canada who also loves to design Cars Cars Cars.

Well this was one long mystery that has come to a lovely ending. Right in my own back yard I can almost say. The saying "One man's trash is another mans treasure" well I take that to heart for sure. I love collecting old photographs, films & paintings. I may not have the most valuable collection of art but to me what I gather is an adventure in its self and is usually a treasure trove of mystery just because they offer me a journey to explore & figure out just what is the story behind every find.

To others of what I collect may be nothing but more than another image or object but to me its history. That's what I make of it. This video is an example of a portion of my collection of images I have found in my travels. I'm drawn to family collections, films or Photographs.

The story behind this collection is complicated and then not. I found them on a street corner not by chance I have to say. Not at a yard sale but at a friends sidewalk who offered them to me that is all. I noticed they were matted and signed and saw the subjects. I felt they were special and that there had to be some kind of story behind them. I felt a connection.

I have many other family photographic albums that have been discarded over time and i have picked them up but for some reason i felt I had to rescue them to preserve them. This collection is one of many I have preserved but because of the recent discovery finally a puzzle solved I know the person behind the camera a bit more and that she has a surviving relative to this day. What a wonderful find but it took a long time. You wouldn't believe the satisfaction of finding someone who was related to the images I had found.

I put the Internet to the test for a few years trying to figure our who this person was. But it wasn't easy.. I had the matted images that were signed and one with another name so that I had to go on. I found tid bits of information finding out she was a well known photographer in her day. Her subjects were often landscapes and portraits, Children and mothers and families.

Some of her images were to be found in archives in very prestigious museums and libraries but who was Dorothy Jarvis? Well after many years of holding onto these images and collecting other lost family photos one day I was talking with a friend about collections and what we didn't know about them. We decided to do another simple search. But this simple search came up with something I had never seen before. This was more personal, someone who was related to Dorothy Jarvis. WOW I said to my friend when I told him I had the other frame of an image shown at an Inn / home of a relative of this woman! This was the Holy Grail and so personally rewarding and exciting.

It lead me on to contact this site and the person behind the site..I saw the other image I had and found out it was her great aunt. What a wonderful find her great aunt had a legacy a history to be proud of and boy was it interesting.. She was thrilled as so was I. Not only was she so close but I knew that because of the previous history I had gathered of this photographer as to her studios and so on. Her relationship to the White mountains of New Hampshire which I am so fond of myself was just a wonderful find. Not miraculous but a good one at that.

I visit there often since my husband is from New Hampshire and I was never a stones throw away myself there and near by the location of the Inn. God she was so close all these years but why no information on the Internet?

We will visit of course to view the majestic views we know so well but to try and look from another eyes perspective from long ago. I'm so thrilled to have held onto this wonderful treasure trove of images to appreciate where the images came from and that I am lucky enough to walk the country side she once photographed before me.

I will pass these onto the family they belong to because they need to go home and to be displayed there. I was just lucky to have come across them when I did. A story in itself. Dorothy Jarvis photographs can be found in the archives of the Smithsonian Institute & the Gardner Museum along with the archives of the Art Museum Of Wellesley College ( Camera Portraits & Photographic Studies) by Dorothy Jarvis, Mrs. Edward Chauvenet Holden, Master Craftsman of the Society of Arts and Crafts.

I thank Wilma R. Slaight, Archivist for being so kind to send me the historic data on an exhibition Dorothy Jarvis held back on Feb. 13, 1936 at Wellesley College. Dorothy Jarvis images can also be seen in landscape architectural books. She photographed many images for Ellen Biddle Shipman, the landscape architect. Another Story in itself but wonderful history to read!

The remaining relative I discovered of these images lives presently at the very place Dorothy Jarvis owned and named and lived with her husband. There's so much more I could lend on this story but its a journey you will have to take yourself from here...you must read up on the art community in Cornish NH to understand the culture when Dorothy and Ellen Shipman lived. I only have found one portrait of Ms. Shipman on the Internet. I'm not sure if she is in this collection but if anyone can identify her or anyone in these photos I would appreciate it.

The place where Dorothy lived during her summers is now the home of Susan & Rod Forsman. I don't know how many times I have been by there but now I will make a note to stop in and take a closer look. What a wonderful location and historic view.

Another tid bit of information on Dorothy is that she had also collaborated in the writing of a book or textbook on photography techniques of her time in landscape and portraiture. I have visited the ship on numerous occasions to look around and this past Christmas decided to film it and went back to add to the clips I already had to complete this film. There's so much I missed so I think I'll have to check it out every now and then.

Its a great full size scale model. The creator of the SS Galaxy is Bill Stirling. It really is something to see. It's one of those good examples of what Second life can be or can put on display. It's a great real life promotional marketing tool.

Information from their site states...
SS Galaxy, the only full size, full scaled, and full featured cruise ship in Second Life.
Anchored in the Sagittarian Sea, the SS Galaxy spans 3 sims with more than 8 decks of fun and entertainment.

Virtually the SS Galaxy...
Proudly carrying on the tradition of luxury , glorious and sophisticated floating palaces of the world, the SS Galaxy offers anarray of amenities and activities on board, and a variety of staterooms (furnished & ready to use!) & suites to chose from, shopping, dining, and dancing. Come cruise the Galaxy! (rooms with prim limits of 100 or less = furnished)
http://www.ssgalaxy.com

ss galaxy virtual ship in second life
http://profilemagazinetoday.com/2009/01/30/second-life--ss-galaxy-virtual-cruise-ship.aspx

This event described below is something that is not all that common in Second Life but possible when an individual establishes themselves in this virtual world at such a scale it becomes truly logistically to complicated and financially frightening.

It played itself out and the outcome was a good one for a short time because people worked together. Second life is also trying to turn itself around and with it others must change. The residents of Second life have no other choice but to evolve along with Second life if they want to continue to participate as either a person playing games or utilizing a technology that in all possibility transforms the way they conduct business overall.

There are great opportunities still to be had in Second Life and in the area of business this gentleman was in. And it actually served a purpose for both a simulation and education in the field of finance and community management and not to mention human behavior. A lot of lessons are to be learned from this one persons gains and short falls.

Intlibber Brautigan to some may not have been the most well liked individual in Second Life and he would have been the first to say that. Some may have even either envied his perseverance or success but then again they may have just not like his virtual character all together.

All that aside I will have to say with him and others like him that they have helped make Second Life a more exciting experience for so many reasons. His business the ACE Exchange wasl one of the remaining virtual locations you could go to and interact with other avatars that are really driven by real human beings to discuss business adventures and barter and trade ideas. I have always loved seeing that connection flow with people in Second Life and having implemented the voice feature the experience is all that more rewarding and much more fun.

He built up a large grouping of sims that simulated a sense of community and commerce. His Estates became others playground and they all meshed together to form a community that lasted for a good time. It had it's ups and downs and it is no longer there. It was Constantly transforming like it should and preparing & re-structuring for the future to come. Unfortunalty is no longer in exsistance because people have moved on. They chose another path in life and like most things there is an end. It served a purpose and taught many people so me hard lessons in the realm of a virtual environment. Beware in whom you trust.

This virtual platform was a great place for business and education and still is but like everything it must be kept in perspective. I saw this one example of a business comunity being used everyday by so many different people from all over the world for many different reasons and not for a few months but for a few years. It really was a virtual community. People made so many connections personally and proffesionally and with some it had really altered their real lives.

So many others also saw this as the direction technology would take to communicate across the globe as it already is being used. It had it's growing pains but it deserved It. Second life is very complex and layered but littered with tools for people to learn and share and grow.

As long as we keep our heads on straight and keep things in perspective and pace ourselves we will continue to play a part in this really fascinating virtual world REAL experience. A great breakthrough in so many areas and on so many levels, we are definitley still a part of a pioneering adventure in a total immersed environment.

The following was a difficult predicament with many rumored speculations that played itself out publically in real life and many lessons were learned. In some cases in Second life there is a lot of money at risk and a lot of money to dish out. If one is not careful they may find themselves in a very serious financial dilema just like in real life which it did.

January 11, 2009 questions were being asked as to the state of Intlibber Brautigan, BNT and the ACE Exchange. The recording posted here is just a taste of how people were feeling about the economy in general in Second Life at that time and how the past had led them to what we now know to actually be true. The estates of Intlibber Brautigan are gone now but not forgotten.

I can't personally say I know what is going on because there has not been an official announcement by Linden Lab or Intlibber Brautigan himself to what the real story was so anything here at the moment is speculative. Its only an observation of the situation and some of my own thoughts.

People move on with their lives like Intlibber did and sometimes with what they had built that so many others depended on as their own virtual experience splinters lives. People lost real money and virtual products not to mention their pride and trust in others.

The following is old news. BNT is no more but this is how things played out.

Some of the groups of BNT have been taken over and now show highlighted a new name, a Linden name, which means owned by that Linden. Which is an interesting and scary situation that is unfolding. This Linden belongs to a group "Linden Estate Services Group" hopefully they are just holding onto the groups for safe keeping and will return them when private business matters are resolved.

It would be a really sad state of affairs if BNT / Intlibber Brautigan were to be liquidated by Linden Lab. Those of you who have known Intlibber Brautigan have either a kind word to say about him or rather a major dislike for him. That is an understatement.

I know him and I have been able to look beyond the bold, outspoken man some may think is a pit bull. But he isn't that at all. He is a business man and yes outspoken but a human. He has been kind and generous to many in Second Life. He has built an empire of his own for many to enjoy.

He built this empire with a vision but also wanted to include others. I believe his intentions were to create exactly what Linden Lab wanted and that was to have a virtual economy flow through Second Life to demonstrate the possibilities a virtual world had to offer.

So for Linden Lab to let go of his sim's and the businesses that reside there would be a bit of a loss to Second life. Even though those sims reflect a fraction of the Second life Population. They still demonstratde what was possible. It was a great model for a virtual world. It was pretty impressive to me.

I believe that he would not have let his investors down if he could help it. Leave them out to dry like others have in the past I just couldn't believe that. But I was wrong. He a lot riding on all this. He was not in that category of cons running a Ponzi scheme. so we thought. Yes he is a ruthless business man and speaks his mind. I pulled away from that group to only pursue my own adventure in Second Life. I now look back and I don't regret a thing. I learned a lot form that experience so it was not a waste of time.

The show goes on without him but what would all of you have had to write about or complain about if it were not for Intlibber? What bothers me personally were the attacks on his physical person. I found that very disturbing.People really showed their real colors and still continue to. I've found so many articles written on him that were so harsh, unnecessary and immature. To this day i don't know what to think really. So many insensitive remarks made by people who most likely don't know the real man and base their claims by a photo or by a single conversation or run in with the guy. This man made some mistakes and moved on. I've saw him support and help others make their virtual dreams come true and create such a really great environment for a time. Yes all good things come to an end but must they?.

We have to remember that there are real people behind these avatars with feelings and agendas. Everything you do in this virtual world should also be thought through as if it were to be played out like in real life if you are going to engage on a personal level.

Caution is always a great personal tool to guide you along your virtual adventure to protect you from scams and let downs. They are still strangers, some with good intentions and others with not so honorable ones. Some may be there to propel themselves to heights they could never achieve physically in real life and others are here to just play a silly game. It is up to the individual resident to pave their way through this journey either making it their own or sharing it with the world.

This recording was a conversation that took place during this ordeal at ACE.

I asked herin chat what brought her to this virtual world and how did she pick her name.

I asked her how her experience in Second Life had helped in her recovery and what where the hurdles she had to overcome. She also shared how the fee increases set her back a bit and what concern she had for her friends in Second Life who have become her social network, her connection to life and who have given her support which has enabled her to help others living with Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) .

I was honored that she allowed me to share her story. Thank you MyOwn Destiny.

HUGS!
Sophia Yates
